I found this article the other day by Homa Khaleeli and thought it was fantastic. The writer seems to exemplify a really important part of the Thoosa philosophy. Running regularly, exercising regularly can make you happier. You begin to focus on what your body can achieve, how you can push yourself that little bit further.
What is always apparent when reading Thoosa Inspired is that running makes people feel better, and that regular running can be something you enjoy, not because of weight loss or looking thinner (nearly always thought of as the most important motivation within the media), but because you will feel stronger. You'll have taken time out of your day and no matter how reluctant you may feel before you start your run, you will always feel better for having done it. You’ll enjoy it. And if you look fantastic whilst running in your Thoosa gear, that’s pretty great too. Read and enjoy.

THOOSA LOVES!
The next instalment of Running with the Kenyans by Adharanand Finn is out today. It’s a lovely piece in which he finds that tea and rest is as important as the training, we couldn’t agree more. After which he manages two training runs in one day. Finally he’s finding his Kenyan feet!

THOOSA LOVES
I came across this article about running in Kenya the other day. I thought it was completely inspiring. The Kenyan attitude to running is described with beauty and it really makes you remember the simplicity of running. You can just run.

THOOSA LOVES!
If you followed our Christmas gift ideas for dogs, then you might remember the gorgeous mulberry fair isle jumper that we thought might make the perfect, if not ridiculously extravagant, present for our favourite four legged friends. Thanks to the lovely people at Mulberry we can now take a peek at the jumper being modelled. Just because... http://blog.mulberry.com/2010/12/22/hot-dogs/

THOOSA LOVES ... BAILEY'S DAY OUT!
Snow covered London was a beautiful sight last week. However, the weather slightly scuppered the running plans; sadly I’m not brave enough to run in the snow or brave the ice. Instead the Thoosa team took a lovely walk through St James Park. And with the beautiful Bailey leading the way we found ourselves at Lily’s Kitchen Diner, a ridiculously lovely pop-up restaurant where the only food on the menu is organic dog food and the clientele is pampered pooches.
Whilst Bailey was served a dish that she seemed to find delicious, we browsed the shelves for dog treats and Christmas presents for our favourite four legged friends. Informative assistants are also on hand to provide nutritional and behavioural advice, though the perfectly behaved Bailey needed none of it!

THOOSA LOVES ... NATIONAL CURRY WEEK!
Often curries are combined with boozy Friday nights and of the high in salt and fat variety. A far cry from the tradition of Indian food, in fact India is the home of one of the world's oldest healthy living regimes, the Ayurveda. Over 5,000 years old, and meaning "knowledge of life", its various principles adopt many ideas, some related to the yin and yang of Chinese medicine; some to the "humours" of Western medicine.
Founded on the principle "you are what you eat", essentially it is thought that foods and spices suit different temperaments and seasons, and chronic medical conditions can be eased by the right foods and severely aggravated by the wrong ones. With the natural developments of the modern world, the ideal dish now serves to balance the body.
Thoosa has found some fantastic recipes that are healthy and follow these principles perfectly. They involve loving preparation, the avoidance of overcooking and great spicing. Lovely!
Cyrus Todiwala's baadal jaam
This is pan-grilled aubergine, topped with tomato sauce and delicious tangy yoghurt. The name literally means "fruit of the clouds"
Serves 4 as part of a balanced Indian meal
2 aubergines
A tin of chopped tomatoes
2-3tbsp sunflower oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 large cloves of garlic, finely chopped
A knob of ginger, finely chopped
Chaat masala (optional)
1/2tsp chilli powder
500g/16oz Greek yoghurt
A pinch of cinnamon
A small handful of fresh coriander, chopped
Salt to season
1tsp lemon juice
Heat the oil in a ridged grill pan. Slice the aubergines into 1cm (1/4 In) thick rounds and cook in the pan in batches until well browned on both sides, using a little of the oil for each batch. You should have a little oil left.
Heat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas6. Heat the rest of the oil in a frying pan and sauté the onion until it's just starting to colour. Then add the ginger and garlic and cook until golden brown. Add the chilli and tomatoes, simmer and reduce a little, then season to taste with salt.
Place the aubergine slices, without overlapping, on a baking tray, sprinkle with chaat masala if desired and spread a spoonful of tomato sauce on each one. Cover with foil and bake for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, make the dressing: whisk the yoghurt with the cinnamon, then stir in the coriander and lemon.
Transfer the aubergines to a serving dish and top with the dollops of the dressing.
Rasam
Rasam is a very healthy soup from south India, made in many different ways but usually with lentils. It forms a vital part of the meal and is sipped both to add flavour and aid digestion: the spices help to make the protein in the lentils much easier to absorb. A popular variation includes tomatoes.
Serves 4
50g/2oz yellow or pink lentils
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 clove of garlic, crushed
1tbsp coriander seeds, finely crushed
2 or 3 dried red chillies
A pinch of turmeric
A pinch of mustard seeds
A pinch of cumin
A pinch of fenugreek
6 black peppercorns
2tbsp tamarind pulp
1litre/13/4 pints water
10 curry leaves (fresh or dried)
1tbsp sunflower oil
Wash and drain the lentils and put them in a casserole dish with the water, turmeric and some salt. Boil until soft.
Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the mustard and let it crackle, then add the onion, curry leaves, coriander, chillies, cumin, peppercorns and fenugreek. Sauté for six minutes, then add the lentil broth and the tamarind and boil. Simmer for 15 minutes, then strain and serve, adding a little coriander. The red chillies can be recovered from the sieve and left to float decoratively in the soup.

THOOSA LOVES
The Official Register of London Marathon Runners £30.00. We admit this may be a slightly unusual book to get excited about. Like much to do with running, it does exactly what it says on the tin. However, there is something so magnificent and heart-warming about this book. Simply, it provides a quite monumental list consisting of all those who have completed the London marathon between 2001 and 2010, together with their time. Incredibly, this is a list containing 350,000 names.
The list is all the more compelling when thinking about the money that thousands of these runners raised for charity and the personal stories to overcome and endure that every one of these people must be able to tell. Obviously, this book would make a fantastic Christmas for anyone who has ran the race. To see your name and time in print, confirmation of such an achievement, especially in such a tome must be pretty brilliant. For some reason, it’s also an entertaining read, providing a brilliant dose of inspiration to boot. What’s in a name? Turns out a hell of a lot!

THOOSA LOVES
Thoosa’s Wednesday morning commute is always a little easier; we face it with a certain spring in our step, along with many women and men of the capital. The reason? Londoners, and perhaps others cities (? let us know) are lucky enough to be blessed with the fabulous and free (!) Stylist Magazine. However, from their website you can read the complete magazine, from wherever you are! Perfect. http://www.stylist.co.uk/home
With a by-line of ‘Fashion, Travel, People, Ideas and Beauty’ it certainly delivers on all topics. It’s packed full of fantastic features. One of our favourites is the ‘Style List’, 30 great ideas of treats and purchases that you could indulge in for yourself or as presents for others, fantastic as the festive season is fast approaching.
Last week there were gorgeous recipes from the lovely Nigel Slater. His simple supper of pasta with handmade watercress and basil pesto is a personal favourite. It offers great ideas for a night out, not just in London but around the country. However if you are visiting the capital Liquid Cashmere at Aqua sounds like a fabulous way to enjoy the views across London. Whilst wrapped in cashmere blankets you get to sip cocktails from the rooftop terrace. Winter suddenly got a lot more appealing.

THOOSA LOVES
Stop the press! Thoosa is loving that fact that potatoes are no longer to be thought of as the enemy! The University of California has found that weight loss is directly influenced by a reduction in calorie intake, not carbs. Potatoes were thought a diet no no due to their high carb content and glycaemic index rating. New research however has shown that volunteers lost a similar amount of weight whether or not potatoes were in their diet. The crucial weight loss factor was for volunteers to reduce their calorie intake by 500 calories. With the nights drawing in comfort food is required. This news couldn’t have come at a better time.

THOOSA LOVES
Thoosa loves the fact that a new study has shown that 55% of people who own a dog feel more relaxed than those who don’t. At Thoosa we have long believed this to be true! As Thoosa fans will know, Caroline is the proud owner of the very beautiful and seriously well-behaved Bailey. I also, am the happy owner of Bob, a slightly (very!) naughty Pugalier (a Pug crossed with a King Charles Cavalier) who, it turns out, is a great running companion and complete magnet for just about anyone walking along the road. In addition, the research found that 44% of dog owners feel more relaxed and less worried about money and job security. Who needs therapy when you have a man’s best friend?

THOOSA LOVES
I was in Waterstones today and this book jumped off the shelf at me. I had a quick look at the back cover which had the following quote:
"This is the funniest book ever written about marathon training - an essentially absurd process that is taken too seriously by far too many runners. This is a must-read for couch potatoes who accidentally sign up for this ambitious athletic event and then think, oh my god, what have I done?"
After that endorsement I couldn't put it down and I have already enjoyed the Introduction by author Dawn Dais the self-proclaimed "worst runner in the world". As she rightly asks, why would anyone want to take marathon training tips from her? Her answer is that it will be good for your self-esteem. She says this:
"When you're in week 10 of your training and your feet suddenly turn into brick weights that you must drag along for miles at a time, do you really think you'll find comfort and inspiration from a runner/ author who could run from here to Argentina with a lethal combination of willpower and calf muscles? No, you need someone whose lack of real running talent or inclination will make you feel great about your own mediocre skills. And I am just that someone to make you feel like a star".
If you want to find out more about the book, click here to see Dawn's website which has the inspirational tagline Get off your butt!

THOOSA LOVES
This week Thoosa has been raiding the shelves of our local newsagent. We’re loving the numerous freebies available with many of the November magazines. Elle gives you the gorgeous Clinique Superbalm, which featured in our “Favourite Five” earlier this month. Marie Claire offers a fantastic Ciate nail varnish worth £9; a vivacious red that will definitely provide a vibrant edge to the camel hues that are dominating the women’s wear palette this season. In Style offers a lovely L’Occitane hand cream that smells delicious and should keep your hands super soft and protected against the harsh effects of winter winds. In addition, each magazine has some great articles and style tips which, together with the free gifts on offer, ensure that your pounds go a long long way. Good stuff.

THOOSA LOVES

Thoosa has been loving that fact that it’s national wool week (11 – 17 October 2010 www.campaignforwool.org). The project aims to promote the versatility and sustainability of this natural fibre with the intention of increasing demand, which has been declining recently. Heaps of high profile brands are supporting the cause, such as Jigsaw, Hobbs and Lyle & Scott. As part of the campaign, London has been overrun with sheep, be it the ones sprayed yellow and herded down Oxford street, as Selfridges did their part for the cause, or the ones that were allowed to graze for the day on the specially turfed gilded streets of Savile Row.
National wool week reminded us at Thoosa of our favourite online place to shop for comforting scrumptious knitwear. If you haven’t already, take a peek at Hush (www.hush-uk.com). Hush offers a fantastic range of loungewear, perfect for snuggling up in after a long run. The Big Sloppy Cardi seems like a winter essential, though, we admit, we covet pretty much the entire collection. Watch out wallets.
If you’re feeling slightly more creative and crafty check out www.folksy.com. This adorable website provides gorgeous gifts like a love heart scarf for your favourite person or even great inspiration if you’re looking for a new hobby and think you might give knitting a go.
