THOOSA LOOKS FORWARD - THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN

With the festive season fast approaching, Thoosa wants to maintain the momentum and keep us all feeling healthy, happy and fit. Inevitably running may take a bit of a back seat. Groggy heads and heavy tums often become the new morning regime. However, we at Thoosa are going to attempt to curb the excesses of Christmas, at least a little bit.

Starting next week we’ll have nutritional tips which will hopefully ease some of the effects of the party season and keep a spring in your step.

Also, up until Christmas we’ll have a weekly exercise that will aid you in strengthening your core, with the knock on affect that a strong core means a more successful run.

And, if you’re looking for gift inspiration then we think we have it covered. We’ve got great ideas for men, women children and pets. So whether you’re buying for a running enthusiast or just running out of ideas, be sure to keep reading our blog.

Oh and, in addition, we’re going to try and find a little ‘me time’ and keep running. Phew! Wish us luck.

THOOSA LOVES ... NATIONAL CURRY WEEK!

The 21-27 of November has marked a week of celebration for the nation’s favourite dish, National Curry Week. The problem however, as is often the case, is that healthy isn’t really a word that one associates with Indian food. And at Thoosa we try to keep it healthy (bar the tiffingate debacle!).

Often curries are combined with boozy Friday nights and of the high in salt and fat variety. A far cry from the tradition of Indian food, in fact India is the home of one of the world's oldest healthy living regimes, the Ayurveda. Over 5,000 years old, and meaning "knowledge of life", its various principles adopt many ideas, some related to the yin and yang of Chinese medicine; some to the "humours" of Western medicine.

Founded on the principle "you are what you eat", essentially it is thought that foods and spices suit different temperaments and seasons, and chronic medical conditions can be eased by the right foods and severely aggravated by the wrong ones. With the natural developments of the modern world, the ideal dish now serves to balance the body.

Thoosa has found some fantastic recipes that are healthy and follow these principles perfectly. They involve loving preparation, the avoidance of overcooking and great spicing. Lovely!

Cyrus Todiwala's baadal jaam

This is pan-grilled aubergine, topped with tomato sauce and delicious tangy yoghurt. The name literally means "fruit of the clouds"
Serves 4 as part of a balanced Indian meal

2 aubergines
A tin of chopped tomatoes
2-3tbsp sunflower oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 large cloves of garlic, finely chopped
A knob of ginger, finely chopped
Chaat masala (optional)
1/2tsp chilli powder
500g/16oz Greek yoghurt
A pinch of cinnamon
A small handful of fresh coriander, chopped
Salt to season
1tsp lemon juice

Heat the oil in a ridged grill pan. Slice the aubergines into 1cm (1/4 In) thick rounds and cook in the pan in batches until well browned on both sides, using a little of the oil for each batch. You should have a little oil left.

Heat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas6. Heat the rest of the oil in a frying pan and sauté the onion until it's just starting to colour. Then add the ginger and garlic and cook until golden brown. Add the chilli and tomatoes, simmer and reduce a little, then season to taste with salt.

Place the aubergine slices, without overlapping, on a baking tray, sprinkle with chaat masala if desired and spread a spoonful of tomato sauce on each one. Cover with foil and bake for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the dressing: whisk the yoghurt with the cinnamon, then stir in the coriander and lemon.

Transfer the aubergines to a serving dish and top with the dollops of the dressing.

Rasam

Rasam is a very healthy soup from south India, made in many different ways but usually with lentils. It forms a vital part of the meal and is sipped both to add flavour and aid digestion: the spices help to make the protein in the lentils much easier to absorb. A popular variation includes tomatoes.
Serves 4

50g/2oz yellow or pink lentils
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 clove of garlic, crushed
1tbsp coriander seeds, finely crushed
2 or 3 dried red chillies
A pinch of turmeric
A pinch of mustard seeds
A pinch of cumin
A pinch of fenugreek
6 black peppercorns
2tbsp tamarind pulp
1litre/13/4 pints water
10 curry leaves (fresh or dried)
1tbsp sunflower oil

Wash and drain the lentils and put them in a casserole dish with the water, turmeric and some salt. Boil until soft.

Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the mustard and let it crackle, then add the onion, curry leaves, coriander, chillies, cumin, peppercorns and fenugreek. Sauté for six minutes, then add the lentil broth and the tamarind and boil. Simmer for 15 minutes, then strain and serve, adding a little coriander. The red chillies can be recovered from the sieve and left to float decoratively in the soup.

THOOSA IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Those of you who’ve already invested in the fabulous Thoosa Chill Jacket this season, won’t be at all surprised that it scored full marks in running4women.com’s product review ! It’s always fantastic to see our products reviewed by real runners.

Thoosa designs are made to make you feel sporty, serious about running or fitness in general, and also to fit the purpose perfectly. In addition, we want them to make you feel comfortable and feminine with fantastic design features and attention to detail.

We couldn’t be happier that Jessica, a running4women member, thought the jacket did all of the above. In her own words Jessica “could not fault the jacket, hugs the body in the right places and doesn’t ride up when running. Perfect running jacket for these cold winter months. Also nice to wear to the gym, lots of people commented on it”. Need we say more?

Click on the link above to read the full review, and, if you haven’t bought one of these beauties then why not drop a Christmas hint and add it to your wish list?!

THOOSA RECOMMENDS

Recently we featured our favourite five foot creams, because Thoosa appreciates the need to take care of our tootsies, particularly if barefoot running is your thing! However, we’re also not adverse to the odd indulgence. With pay day not coming fast enough Thoosa is loving the fact that the December issue of Glamour magazine is giving away one of a choice of nail colours by the fabulous Nails Inc. The grey Jermyn Street polish is bang on trend, but any one of the colours should see you through the party season with a little extra va va voom! Sold separately the nail colour would retail at £10 making the £2 cover price worth it for the polish alone. Happily you also get a fab magazine chock-full of gift ideas and great articles. Hurry!

THOOSA LOVES

The Official Register of London Marathon Runners £30.00. We admit this may be a slightly unusual book to get excited about. Like much to do with running, it does exactly what it says on the tin. However, there is something so magnificent and heart-warming about this book. Simply, it provides a quite monumental list consisting of all those who have completed the London marathon between 2001 and 2010, together with their time. Incredibly, this is a list containing 350,000 names.
The list is all the more compelling when thinking about the money that thousands of these runners raised for charity and the personal stories to overcome and endure that every one of these people must be able to tell. Obviously, this book would make a fantastic Christmas for anyone who has ran the race. To see your name and time in print, confirmation of such an achievement, especially in such a tome must be pretty brilliant. For some reason, it’s also an entertaining read, providing a brilliant dose of inspiration to boot. What’s in a name? Turns out a hell of a lot!

THOOSA FOUND

Whilst researching a little piece about the Fartlek training (more of which later this week), we came across this fantastic article, by Miles Dickson, about barefoot running. Whilst personally I don’t feel established enough as a runner to start trying out new techniques etc, I thought this sounded really interesting. So, if you’re looking to add a new dimension to your training, especially if you run on a treadmill, we thought this might be of interest. Enjoy! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/wellbeing/8146500/Fitness-Workshop-Barefoot-Running.html

THOOSA INSPIRED

This week Lindsay from Bristol is our Thoosa Inspiration...

1. When did you start running and why?
I started running when I drunkenly agreed to do the Bristol half marathon in 2007. When I reluctantly started training I found it hard going but once I starting seeing improvements in my stamina it spurred me on and I realised that it was a fantastic way to keep fit and explore your local area.

2. Why is running more appealing to you than other forms of exercise?
It’s free!

3. What has been your biggest challenge as a runner?
Finding the motivation on cold, wet dark evenings – a running club can really help with this.

4. What has been your most memorable running experience?
Completing a very sweaty 10K in Barbados. When we finished we all stripped down to our underwear and cooled down in the Caribbean Ocean – incredible!

5. Do you find that running helps you in other areas of your life?
I must admit that I’m not a big thinker while I run so whilst some people are solving global debt I’m floating along in thoughtless bliss. So to answer your question – yes, it clears my mind.

6. What makes you pull yourself out of bed in the dark winter mornings and get outside?
I’m sorry to say that nothing does… that’s why I’m an evening runner. But some evenings aren’t very appealing either so I recently joined Southville running club in Bristol. We run twice a week and cater for all abilities. They are such a friendly bunch so it’s always a pleasure to see everyone plus I always find that I push myself that bit harder than when I run alone.

7. What’s your favourite way to unwind after a run?
Honestly? A beer.

8. Do you run socially or on your own?
Both

9. What’s your favourite piece of running kit (it doesn’t have to be Thoosa!)?
I recently bought a hi-vis tabard to wear over my kit on these dark nights. It’s hilarious because it wouldn’t look out of place at a rave in the 90’s!

10. What other exercise do you enjoy?
I walk to and from work but running is really the only exercise I do. Joining a gym has crossed my mind a number of times especially now it’s dark in the evenings and running alone isn’t too clever but now I’ve joined a club that has put that to rest.

THE BEGINNER'S BLOG ... THE GLEE FACTOR!

A lovely realisation hit me on Sunday morning. For a while, Sunday has been the day of the weekend when I go for a hopefully productive run. Dare I say it? OK, it almost feels like a bit of a routine. And this was the realisation. For the first time I felt like a proper runner, exciting!

Like a thunder bolt this thought came to me, ironically, whilst I was sat in a little French cafe. Worse, I was munching on a pain au chocolate, drinking a large cappuccino, looking out over Clapham common on a damp November morning. Through the condensation and rain lashed windows, amongst the varying tones of lush green and grey, men and women dressed brightly, whizzed in and then out of view.

I’d taken a raincheck on my ritual Sunday run for a lovely little chin wag and coffee with an old friend. In between lovely chat, lots of laughs and the collective reading of Heat magazine (guilty) the runner inside me had a little think. Was I happy to be inside in the warm? Of course. Was the thought of being outside running in the rain horrible? No! Was I thinking of going for a run later on that day? Yes! Amazing. I was actually looking forward pounding the pavements...in the rain. This made me, not just the runner inside me smile. I munched my croissant in glee. Lovely!

RUNNING WITH DOGS

If you’re eager to take your casual jog around the park to the next level then look no further than canine cross-country – CaniX.  This form of dog-powered cross-country sees the competitor strapped to their pouch(s) who then pull them around the course (which is usually 5km).

The races take place around the country from September to May and it’s an increasingly popular sport among women who make up about 60% of the field.  The event organiser, Eileen Cook says this:

It’s for everybody – beginners and elite runners alike.  As long as you have a moderately fit dog – whether it’s a tiny Papillon, a giant Great Dane or anything in between- you can take part…..

You definitely don’t have to be super fit- there are new beginner-level entrants and elite athletes in every race.  You just run at the pace that suits you and your dog, and most importantly, enjoy yourself”.

For full details and the event listings see www.cani-cross.co.uk

THOOSA'S FAVOURITE FIVE ... FOOT CREAMS

Anyone who read Thoosa’s fantastic piece about trail shoes will know that our feet suffer for our love of running, particularly in the winter. They can get wet in the rain, if not wearing the right shoe, or sometimes the right shoe can make them wet through sweat. This does not sound glamorous! As the festive season approaches, high heels are calling, it’s time Thoosa followers took action. In this vain we’ve tested the best foot creams, to soothe, moisturise and treat.

1) Kiehls Cross Terrain Dry-Run Foot Cream; £15.50. The most expensive of the foot creams we tried. But, it was money well spent. This was a true treat for our running feet! We loved it. The formula kept our feet dry and smooth. The slip-resistant cream is designed to prime feet for any activity by providing a long-lasting dry feel. In addition it contains sweat-absorbing volcanic extracts and Aloe Vera; this promotes relief from minor skin irritations due to perspiration and the stresses and abuses incurred by active feet. Blimey, truly a runner’s bathroom cabinet essential. Thoosa’s Star Buy!

2) Eucerin Dry Skin Intensive Foot Cream; £10.65. This fab cream is developed to soothe even the driest of feet, to provide long lasting hydration. Lipids in the formula apparently work to help reduce cracks and calluses. A winter essential indeed.

3) Scholl Deep Moisturising Cream: £4.16. A great price for a cream that is simple but effective. It promises to give an immediate 80% increase in hydration, leaving feet soft, smooth and conditioned. We’re not sure about the 80% claim, but our feet felt fantastic after testing out this beauty. Ideal for happy winter tootsies.

4) Lotil Foot Cream; £5.49. Call 01235 838 590. This cream is great for us sporty types as it’s designed to fight bacteria using a formula that incorporates rosemary extract, a natural anti-oxidant. With the addition of Aloe Vera the cream left our feet feeling soothed and healthy. Lovely.

5) Lush Pied De Pepper Foot Lotion; £6.55. What doesn’t this formula contain? Olive oil, cocoa butter, white clove oil, cinnamon and ginger! Wow. All of these combine to create a delicious smelling cream that aims to moisturise, soothe and warm your feet. This cream was best used after exercising. It works on your feet while you relax. Lush indeed!

THOOSA SAYS, HAPPY MOVEMBER!

You may have noticed that men across the country have an ever evolving furry face this month. November becomes Movember  as the annual, month long celebration of the moustache is upon us, all in order to raise awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer.

Thanks to Mo Running  heaps of you will be running 10km tomorrow (13th Movember) in Greenwich Park, avec the furry stuff, whilst raising money for this fantastic cause. This run is sold out; however you may feel like showing up, cheering and generally showing your support. There is also still time to sign up for the Mo Running 5km run next weekend in Battersea Park.

Whether you’re cheering, growing or running, good luck and well done from all of the Thoosa team.

THOOSA LOVES

We recently came across this great new company called Grannies Inc.  The idea is brilliantly original.  Choose your products (a beanie, a scarf etc), choose your colour of wool and then choose your granny to knit it.  Genius.  The website is worth checking out for list of grannies who are based around the country and have one thing in common - they all love knitting.  Well done to founder Katie Mowat for thinking of such an original business idea.  I'm sure she won't mind us sharing the 10% discount voucher that we picked up at the Ski and Snowboard show.  Enter code SNOWSHOW10 in the checkout - it's valid till 24 November.

THOOSA TESTS - DOG v TRAIL SHOES

Anyone living in London will know what sort of weather we had today - it poured with rain and was almost literally blowing dogs off chains.  So a perfect day for testing my new trail running shoes.  I bought them from Runner's Need and the shop assistant could not have been more helpful (he was also quite good-looking which always helps!).  My problem was wet feet when I run on grass which I do most mornings and so I thought that water-proof shoes would be the answer.  Apparently not.  The problem with gortex style water-proof running shoes is that your feet cannot breath and so they end up getting wet from sweating.  I was pointed in the direction of the Asics Gel-Trabuco which seemed to tick all the boxes.

Today was their first outing and they performed brilliantly.  They were extremely comfortable and supportive.  The grip was excellent and to my surprise my feet stayed dry - which is more than can be said for the dog!

THOOSA IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The December issue of Runner's World recently landed on our doorstep and we were pretty pleased to turn to the gear section to find the model fully kitted out in Thoosa (Chill jacket in sea and Chill tights in rose). Thanks to the RW team for recognising our gear as winter running essentials.

THOOSA LOVES

Thoosa’s Wednesday morning commute is always a little easier; we face it with a certain spring in our step, along with many women and men of the capital. The reason? Londoners, and perhaps others cities (? let us know) are lucky enough to be blessed with the fabulous and free (!) Stylist Magazine. However, from their website you can read the complete magazine, from wherever you are! Perfect. http://www.stylist.co.uk/home

With a by-line of ‘Fashion, Travel, People, Ideas and Beauty’ it certainly delivers on all topics. It’s packed full of fantastic features. One of our favourites is the ‘Style List’, 30 great ideas of treats and purchases that you could indulge in for yourself or as presents for others, fantastic as the festive season is fast approaching.

Last week there were gorgeous recipes from the lovely Nigel Slater. His simple supper of pasta with handmade watercress and basil pesto is a personal favourite. It offers great ideas for a night out, not just in London but around the country. However if you are visiting the capital Liquid Cashmere at Aqua sounds like a fabulous way to enjoy the views across London. Whilst wrapped in cashmere blankets you get to sip cocktails from the rooftop terrace. Winter suddenly got a lot more appealing.

THE BEGINNER'S BLOG - TIFFINGATE

Why is it that at the moment, every time I attempt to write the Beginners’ Blog I feel as though I have to start with a confession? So, the weather...I know I keep offering tips on how to motivate and be inspired but it appears I’m not following my own advice. Or, to be more precise, the rain keeps washing all good intentions away.

Yesterday, the only thing I could talk to anyone about, or wanted to write about, was the weather, so apologies. It’s cold and wet, just in case you hadn’t noticed. My trainers seem to be slumped in the corner of my room, or was that just me, and the only thing motivating me is a blanket and the television. Not a great start to the week.

Caroline emailed to see how my run was. I confessed that I had managed to leave the house but only to walk to my local CostCutters to buy some Digestives! In fact it gets worse. I didn’t tell the whole truth. I bought dark chocolate and sultanas and instead of running I made tiffin. For a certain sense of satisfaction you could follow this recipe below. I’m not going to pretend this recipe is in anyway healthy. It’s packed full of sultanas, which I think are good, and at least it’s dark chocolate, which is better than milk. However, whichever way you try to spin it, these are a treat to be modified, but I love them. And guess what? Having eaten five of these bites I suddenly found the inspiration for the run. I have to work work work off these calories somehow!

Thoosa’s Inspirational Tiffin

170 gm of Plain Chocolate;
50 gm of Butter;
225 gm of Digestive Biscuits;
125 gm of Sultanas;
50 gm of Glace Cherries; and
The rind and juice of one orange (optional)

Melt the chocolate and butter in a heat proof bowl over a pan of warm water. In the meantime, crush the digestives into crumbs. When the chocolate and butter is melted mix together and stir in the biscuit crumbs, the sultanas and the cherries (you could also add in the orange if you like chocolate and orange). Once all mixed, place in a greased baking tin. Flatten the mixture until it feels really compact. Place the tin in the fridge and leave to set. When ready cut into little squares for bite size portions. All the inspiration you need!

THOOSA LOVES

Stop the press! Thoosa is loving that fact that potatoes are no longer to be thought of as the enemy! The University of California has found that weight loss is directly influenced by a reduction in calorie intake, not carbs. Potatoes were thought a diet no no due to their high carb content and glycaemic index rating. New research however has shown that volunteers lost a similar amount of weight whether or not potatoes were in their diet. The crucial weight loss factor was for volunteers to reduce their calorie intake by 500 calories. With the nights drawing in comfort food is required. This news couldn’t have come at a better time.

THOOSA'S FAVOURITE FIVE . . . TIPS ON STAYING SAFE

Sadly, dark nights and mornings can expose us all to risk. Following these simple tips may help you feel less exposed and hopefully, allow you to concentrate on your love of running. Have fun, get fit and stay safe!

1) Wear your house keys around your neck. This makes them easily accessible when you arrive home;

2) The Minder Wrist Jogging Alarm is discreet and a cheap way to feel reassured; £6.99, http://www.amazon.co.uk/;

3) Use the discreet hidden pockets in your running wear to store all absolute necessities on your person, rather than in your running bag;

4) Plan your autumn/winter routes before you set out. Stick to well lit, built up areas. Woods and lots of foliage may be picturesque but may expose you unexpected risk;

5) There seem to be running clubs popping up everywhere. Running with people is a great motivator but also there is safety in numbers.

THOOSA INSPIRED

This week we’re lucky enough to have Rebecca Jenks share her love of running with Thoosa Inspired.

1. When did you start running and why?

When I was 21, after university I decided to start running to get fit. 4 years of full-on study/sitting on my butt, decided it was time!

2. Why is running more appealing to you than other forms of exercise?

It isn’t necessarily, I also love swimming, and working out in the gym. I got good at running, and I think you thrive on things you get good at!

3. What has been your biggest challenge as a runner?

Injury, and finding the time post having children.

4. What has been your most memorable running experience?

London marathon 2005, when I clocked under 3 hours 40 mins. It was a beautiful sunny day; I had a great run.

5. Do you find that running helps you in other areas of your life?

Only in that it releases stress.

6. What makes you pull yourself out of bed in the dark winter mornings and get outside?

My kids. I run in the gym if the weather is not great

7. What’s your favourite way to unwind after a run?

Get a coffee and sit in the bath

8. Do you run socially or on your own?

On my own, it’s my ‘me time’.

9. What’s your favourite piece of running kit (it doesn’t have to be Thoosa!)?

Nike. I use their bra tops, winter leggings, all bought in the US.

10. What other exercise do you enjoy?

Swimming in an outdoor pool in hot climates! Kick boxing – LOVE IT! Very different to long distance running, a great burst of strength!
